Sutton academy's Matt Illingworth who gave French top seed Alex Sidorenko a massive scare in rd1. Illingworth served for the 1st set at 5-4 but was unable to hold his nerve and Sidorenko hit back to win 7-5, 6-3

James Ward, who trains at the Juan Carlos Ferrero Equelite academy in Valencia, made a rare trip back to Britain to play this tournament. Unfortunately he came up against the on-form Frenchman Laurent Recouderc in rd1. Recouderc outplayed the British teenager in the first set, winning it 6-2. James battled back from a double-break down in the 2nd, to level at 4-4 but the Frenchman proved too strong, winning 6-2, 7-5.

17 year old Amanda Elliott had the best week of her career, coming through qualifying and then outplaying a series of higher ranked opponents to reach her first 10K final. Amanda had a number of impressive results during a series of junior events on clay in South America earlier in the year and her liking for the surface showed again this week. She knocked out Italian 3rd seed Balducci 7-6, 6-2 in rd1, German qualifier Syna Kayser 6-4, 6-0 in rd2, Swiss Nicole Riner 6-4, 6-4 in the quarters and then reached the final when her opponent in the semis withdrew with injury. Amanda was denied her first senior title by Russian Anastasia Pivonorova who was in unstoppable form all week
